That kind of man

Over the past year, I have had the opportunity to interact with and/or hear from men who have made a huge impact on me. They each have demonstrated characteristics that appeal to me and give me a sense of hope about what kind of man I want to be and can be. In many ways, they are much different than what I have typically been in the past.

One man I heard share his story demonstrated huge integrity and determination to provide for his family and undo the mess he had created. He refused to go bankrupt and spent eight grueling years paying off $1 million in debt he had accumulated in order to appear successful. Through blood, sweat and tears he overcame his failures and became a hero to his wife and family. I want to be that kind of man.

Another man I met spent five years building a business that pushed him way out of his comfort zone. He said he had to basically reinvent himself and is better because of it. His faith in God and determination to overcome his negative past led him into financial and spiritual freedom. He became the father he had always wanted to be to his two daughters and is changing his family legacy. I want to be that kind of man.

I met a man who has a heart for giving and missions. He talked for two hours the first time we met about his recent mission trips overseas and the impact it had on his life. He said he has been blessed financially and felt compelled to help build a church for this poor pastor in that country. He showed me pictures of the progress and the smiles on the people's faces. What a blessing it was to be able and willing to do such a thing. I want to be that kind of man.

I recently met a man who lives to help others. His life mission is make a positive difference in the lives of people. He spends all day every day serving and helping others grow physically and live a healthier life. He knows them by name, he knows their story, and he considers them a friend. He is loved by everyone he meets and has huge influence on each and every person he encounters. I want to be that kind of man.

There are other men who I have listened to and watched who demonstrate integrity, kindness, boldness, passion, a servants heart, and Godly wisdom. I want to be around men who have become successful in life by honoring God and being committed to their families. I want to be around men who refuse to let fear and shame dictate their minds and decisions. I want to be around men who lead their families well and are heroes to their wives and children.

Jesus is the true hero of a man. When we as men model our lives after him, we change the world. When we love Jesus and lead as a result of His leadership in us, then lives are changed. Our families need us to get serious about Christ and His life. Our world and communities need us to get serious about our faith in Him. We as men need to get off the sidelines and get in the game. I have failed in this area for long enough. Jesus, help me be "that kind of man" who honors You!
